I made a list that contains every entry in the third edition of the Oxford Dictionary of Art, published in 2004. For each biographical entry the name, primary discipline, birthplace and gender have been recorded. I have also recorded the number of lines allocated to each entry regardless of whether it is biographical or not. Each artist's value is represented by the number of lines he or she is given by the Dictionary's editors. I have been using this information to develop rankings and statistics aimed at revealing the arbitrariness of the institutional structure of the Dictionary itself.

There are 3846 entries on 97 pages. Asterisks mark entries which only refer the reader to other entries in the dictionary. The politics of this process is interesting in and of itself. The list has been presented here in two columns.
